DraftKings has positioned itself to attack the New York marketplace once the state begins allowing for sports betting within its borders. Today, the daily fantasy sports operator that has pivoted to a sportsbook offering announced a new partnership with del Lago Resort in Waterloo, New York, which will give DraftKings a physical sportsbook presence and provide it the opportunity to create a mobile and online wagering option assuming that New York regulates such sports betting in the future.
New York is a heavy battleground for DraftKings, which once again finds itself competing against long-time rival FanDuel, a company that also has heavily pivoted from being daily fantasy sports oriented to focused on its sportsbook offerings. FanDuel has crafted a similar partnership to DraftKings' in New York by way of its new relationship with Nichols, New York-based Tioga Downs.
The American Gaming Association says that New York is the second-largest potential sports betting market in the United States, with California in the top position.
Most people assume that the New York State Gaming Commission will establish rules that allow for mobile and online wagering, which is important for more fully capturing those consumers already placing such wagers illegally. DraftKings is of the position that its mobile and online product will allow it to establish a lead against its competitors, as it began working on such product roughly one year ago.
DraftKings has previously partnered with Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The company's press release indicates an expectation that it will offer mobile and online sports betting in New Jersey by the start of the 2018 NFL season.
